Equipment

  • 1 large saucepan
  • 1 immersion blender
  • 1 airtight container

Ingredients
  

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup white onion , finely diced
  • 2 cups water
  • 6 ounce tomato paste , a small can
  • ½ cup light brown sugar , packed
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup light Agave nectar
  • ¼ cup lemon juice , freshly squeezed
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp black pepper , coarsely ground
  • 1 tbsp Ancho chili powder
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1 tsp celery salt
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp hickory powder
  • 2 tsp kosher salt

Instructions
 

  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter
  • Add the diced onions and sauté until translucent.
  • Add the water, tomato paste, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, agave nectar, and lemon juice then stir until well combined
  • Add the Worcestershire sauce plus all of the seasonings then stir again.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil, put the lid on, then simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and let cool.
  • Blend the sauce with an immersion blender until smooth
  • Serve immediately, or transfer to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to several weeks.
