More Information

Frijoles refritos are a staple in Tex-Mex cuisine. You will see them served with Mexican Rice in just about every Mexican restaurant meal. In fact, your water or waitress will probably ask if you want charros or refritos with your meal. You can’t go wrong, both options taste great!

Refried beans help bind tacos or burritos together. They are delicious and easy to scoop up with a warm tortilla, or totopos caseros.

Refried beans?

In Spanish, the prefix ‘re-‘ translates to ‘a lot’ or ‘thoroughly’, not ‘again’ as in English. Refried beans, or Frijoles refritos are pinto beans that are first boiled, then fried. They are cooked a lot, not fried twice.

The beans are fried?

Sauté the cooked beans in lard or oil while mashing them with a potato masher. This gives the refried beans a creamy texture. Without the oil, the beans would simply dry out in the pan, which is not nearly as delicious.

If you want super-creamy and smooth refried beans, after frying you could add them to a food processor.
