The Godfather Italian meatball sub is one of my favorite sandwiches. Served open-faced and made with Italian meatballs, Mozzarella cheese and Arrabbiata sauce, it’s hot, spicy, and delicious.

Please be careful!
This recipe requires repeatedly putting food in and out of the broiler oven. Please be careful, and use oven mitts! I burned the heck out of my hand with the hot broiler by allowing myself to be distracted.
Inspiration
When I was a kid, I worked at a pizza and sandwich shop in Spring, TX named Greek Toni’s. They made a spicy Italian sausage sub named, ‘The Godfather’, which was the inspiration behind this delicious sandwich. The sandwich was so spicy, it was almost too hot to eat. It wasn’t too expensive, but you certainly paid the price. It sure was tasty, though!
Locations
Sadly, like so many other Mom and Pops, Greek Toni’s permanently went out of business in Spring, Texas. Luckily, there may be a couple options in Michigan. Look them up!
Meatballs
My Italian Meatballs are made with ground beef, ground lamb, and sweet Italian sausage. For spicier meatballs you could use hot Italian sausage instead.
Cheese choices
Instead of Mozzarella, you could use Provolone instead, or a combination of both. Provolone cheese melts up nicely, and tastes delicious on the Godfather Italian meatball sub.
