More Information

Italian Cold Cuts

My Panino con Salumi sandwich recipe calls for prosciutto, sopressata, and salami. But, any Salumi would work just fine. Mortadella, Pancetta, or Capocollo would all be delicious on this sandwich. Just see what Italian cold-cuts your deli has to offer. Make sure the meats are sliced very thin. Use a few different varieties, and pile it high to build a tasty sandwich. For a spicy variant, use thinly sliced sandwich pepperoni.

Ciabatta Bread

Ciabatta bread is soft, and has lots of small holes which act as pockets that hold the Creamy Italian Dressing. Every bite will be moist, delicious, and packed with flavor.

Cheese Options

I like American Cheese because it is soft, and not overly flavorful. It does not detract from the other flavors and textures in the sandwich. Provolone cheese would also be an excellent option, for the very same reasons.

Lettuce

Instead of shredded leaf lettuce, you could use shredded iceberg lettuce. If you use shredded lettuce, you can toss it with the dressing before adding it to the sandwich. If you use un-shredded lettuce, just apply the dressing directly to the ciabatta bread.

Tomato

Garden tomatoes are best. The tomato should be not overly ripe, and sliced thin. Always salt and pepper your tomato slices before adding to the sandwich for the best flavor.

Peperoncini

I love using sliced pickled peperoncini on sandwiches. They have a distinctive aroma, and mildly spicy bite that enhances the flavor of the sandwich without overpowering it. Optionally serve a whole peperoncini on the side. If you serve it on the side, consider cutting a small slit into it with a paring knife to let the trapped vinegar out, or else you might wear it on your shirt when it squirts out after taking a bite.
