A Bit of History
When I was a child in Lafayette, Louisiana we would often visit my aunt and uncle’s farm in a small town called Sunset, Louisiana. My uncle Jay Pellerin grew watermelons, among other things. He would harvest watermelons in late June, and there would be a huge mountain of watermelons piled up in the yard. Of course, all of the kids would have some. It was a lot of fun!
When I was a little bit older, I went to a boy’s summer camp called Friday Mountain Camp in Driftwood, Texas. It was a Texas Historical Landmark since 1964. The land was eventually bought by a Hindu temple named Barsana Dham. It was a wonderful place to learn how to be a good person, and to make great memories.
Friday Mountain Camp had a swimming hole called Windy Cove. Sometimes all of the campers would get to go for a swim. The camp counselors would grease up some watermelons with Vaseline, and throw them into the cold water. It was fun trying to catch one and get it out!
Watermelon is Part of Southern Culture
Eating watermelon is deeply entrenched in Southern culture. I don’t care who you are or where you came from, you cannot deny the way eating watermelon brings people together. You cannot eat it without a smile! When you drink a Watermelon Margarita, I guarantee you will smile! Even if you don’t actually smile, you are bound to end up with a big red watermelon grin on your face.
What to do with all of that watermelon?
Have you ever bought a whole watermelon, and cut it up into wedges? It’s so refreshing in the hot summertime. But, how are you going to eat all of that watermelon? If you are not having a party, even a small watermelon is hard not to waste. Watermelon Margaritas are a perfect way to use up that extra watermelon!
I have always liked putting a pinch of salt on my watermelon. It really seems to bring out the sweetness. This is part of what makes a salted rim Watermelon Margarita taste so good!
This drink would be perfect for a pool-side party, or for grilling on a warm summer afternoon.
