More Information
This recipe for Agave Margarita is a more tart, less sweet variant than my House Margarita, my Strawberry Margarita, or my Watermelon Margarita. It uses premium 100% blue agave tequila, such as Hornitos Plata Silver, and premium orange liqueur, such as Paula’s Texas Orange. For a great tasting margarita, use fresh limes and don’t skimp on the ingredients!
About the Blue Agave Plant and Tequila
A blue agave plant must mature for seven to fourteen years before it can be harvested and processed. The heart of this plant, called the piña, can weigh as much as a couple hundred pounds! The piña is chopped up and steamed in large pressure cookers. It is then milled to extract the juice and the fibers. The juice has a high concentration of sugars which are fermented twice to create a uniquely flavored liquor called Tequila. Tequila is named after a town in Jalisco, Mexico’s which shares the same name.
Agave nectar is another key ingredient in an Agave Margarita.
Tequila brands to try
Some notable tequila brands include Hornitos, Don Julio, Patrón, Herradura, and Clase Azul. Many of these have interesting shaped bottles, which are great to show off on a bar shelf.
